Covington Fire Department
I have now been Medical Director for the Covington Fire Department for about six months.  There have been a few obstacles to overcome but we continue to rapidly evolve into an excellent ALS Agency.  I have been very impressed by the dedication of our new Paramedics.  They provide constant feedback to Director of EMS Operations Karl Chalk as well as myself.  They are taking a very proactive role in improving the care that we provide to every patient we touch.  I have also been overwhelmed by the dedication of the firefighters.  In their EMS capacity they monitor dispatch and take it upon themselves to respond to calls where they feel the Paramedics can use their assistance.  They seem willing to do whatever it takes to take care of the patients.  I see a wonderful team approach to patient care developing.

In 2005 we will continue to strive for the highest level of patient care that we can provide.  I also plan to place a large focus on institution of EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch).  These changes at dispatch will result in 911 callers recieving pre-arrival instuctions. The changes will also result in collection of more extensive and accurate information by dispatchers, that can be passed along to our responding units.

I also hope to continue doing ride-along time on the Ambulances.  The only way for me to truely undurstand the daily challenges our paramedics face is to routinely spend time with them.  Finally, I hope that we can introduce the concept of Tactical Medicine to both the Fire Department and Law Enforcement in Covington.  We owe it to our police to be involved in their high-risk operations and to ensure that they are well taken care of.
Here's the two latest additions to the Covington Fire Department Family.

I guess this is Covington Fire Department's newest Unit.  I will be responding as Medical Command 1 (MC-1).  I plan on doing ride-along time with both ALS and BLS crews as well as responding to any large scale or mass casualty incidents.  I may also respond to some fire scenes to oversee the care provided to the firefighters.
